A Dress for Spring

Hi again! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted here… life kinda got busy. But I’m back! And don’t worry, I’ve been creating plenty during my blogging hiatus. My biggest finish lately was this dress for my sister.

This is the second time I’ve made this pattern - its the Open Back Babydoll Dress by MarthaWis. Of course, you know I had to make a bunch of modifications too. My sister wanted a knee-length dress so each tier of the skirt is lengthened by about 1.5 inches. I also removed the sleeves since they were a bit too puffy for her taste. This was really easy - I just added 3/8” to the straps and sewed RST before attaching to the dress. The more difficult modification was making the dress with a closed back, which meant getting rid of the elastic and the big bow. I drafted a rectangle for the back, but then realized that the dress would be impossible to pull over her head. The only answer was …. ahhh!…. an invisible zipper (insert dramatic screaming). It was my first time sewing one, and although I struggled with it, it was not an impossible task.

My fabric was this double cotton gauze in a beautiful shade called spa blue. I was very happy with the fabric and with the Etsy seller was amazing too. Note to self though, next time you sew with double gauze use a seam allowance at least a 1/2 inch or larger. My seam allowance was 3/8 inch and it was just too small for such unruly fabric.

The dress doesn’t have quite as much waist definition as my sister had been hoping for… but hey, I’m not an expert, I’m just making it up as I go along. And in the end, I really am happy with this dress. It has a wild, sorta springy feel to it - and I like it :)
