A Pineapple - For No Particular Reason
Somedays you just need to make something without a reason. To just create something out of whatever comes to mind, whatever makes you happy in that minute. That is exactly how I ended up with a pineapple mini-quilt.
There’s just something about the vibrant colors and interesting shape of a pineapple that are the perfect inspiration for a scrappy little picture. I collected all my yellow and green scraps and then proceeded to cut them into small squares. I framed the pineapple in some linen I picked up from the cutest little craft store in Murphy’s, California. It was truly Serendipity. No, literally, the store is called Serendipity.
I know some people say you shouldn’t mix linen and cotton when quilting - but I frequently find myself unable to resist the beautiful text and color of linen when paired with bright cottons. Many times I have recklessly paired the two substrates, and, so far, lighting hasn’t come down to strike me. For quilting, I hand-quilted the pineapple with DMC floss. But, really, it ended up being more like embroidery because, (a). I decided to do little scales on the fruit and, (b). the back is so messy it would never pass as the bottom of a quilt. The background was straight-line quilted on a diagonal and then I tied the ends off when they ran into the pineapple.
Like my title suggests, I have no use for this fruity little piece. However, I did really enjoy getting to play with these little scrappy squares on a whim.
