My 9 Favorite Sewing Blogs to Read
I love reading maker’s blogs. You get a little taste of their personality, their creative style, and loads of beautiful pictures. I almost always leave a sewing blog feeling inspired and motivated to create something myself! That said, not all blogs are created equal. These nine blogs are my absolute favorite to read. All of them are well written and feature amazing, modern projects. Additionally, most of these blogs are ad-free, which makes for such an enjoyable read. I follow all these blogs personally and a new post from any one of them gets me excited! So here we go… in no particular order…
Felix Quilt from Penelope Handmade
This blog is awesome! It features colorful modern quilts with the occasional traditional touch. Jennifer’s posts are easy to read and include a lot of in-progress photos so you really get a feel for her making process. I love how each new quilt she makes, even if it’s from a previous pattern, has a fresh, new vibe to it. She also sells patterns, so if you like pouring over photos of her quilts - go ahead and make one of her quilt patterns! Go check it out: penelopehandmade.com/blogs/news
2. Stitched in Color
Big Sun, a block in Rachel’s Positivities BOM
Stitiched in Color is just full of bright and happy quilts bound to make one smile. Rachel’s blog includes helpful tutorials, gorgeous pictures of projects she’s working on, and little notes about what it’s like living in the Netherlands (always interesting!). Her posts, which weave in her personal life with her quilts, are always enjoyable to read and include the perfect balance of words to pictures (about 50/50). She posts consistently and frequently. I often leave her blog feeling inspired to use color in some new way or to start a new project just because I feel like it! Rachel also sells and designs quilt patterns and is a longarmer. 3. The Blanket Statement
The Blanket Statement’s Victoria Beach Quilt
Any quilt from The Blanket Statement is just that, a statement. All of Erin’s designs are bold, modern, and super fun to look at on the blog! I love to see all the different versions of her quilt patterns from her testers. She also posts an occasional quilting tutorial - which are always helpful. 4. Then Came June
Star Adventure quilt with Robert Kaufman’s Color of the Year
Raise your hand if you love beautiful, well lit photos of gorgeous quilts. Yeah, that’s pretty much everyone. Meghan’s blog posts are all about those delicious quilty photos. Her quilts are bright, bold, and modern - and she sums her quilts so beautifully in her blog pictures. Getting to read a post from Then Came June is always a treat (it’s quilty eye candy!). Meghan’s quilt patterns are also for purchase on her website. Go check it out: thencamejune.com/blogs/blog
5. Diary of a Quilter
Amy’s Sentimental Stars free quilt pattern
This blog, by Amy Smart, features a wide variety of posts. You get to read about her current projects, tutorials, gift guides and much, much more. Amy has been blogging for fifteen years, and both her quilting and writing experience shows in her posts. Diary of a Quilter is a very well put together blog that is sure to inspire! 6. Poundcake
Lia’s Faye Dress from Fibremood
This is the only blog I have included here that is not a quilting blog. Lia is primarily a garment sewist, and she writes the most honest and fun posts about her sewing adventures. This is the only sewing blog that can get me to actually laugh out loud; I just love her writing style so much, especially her use of parentheses! I read every post she writes on her blog, they are SO fun. Lia keeps track of the time and money she spends on each project and has inspired me to do the same. She also will explain modifications she makes to patterns or how she drafted her own pattern, so that you can do so too. Please go check it out: poundcakesewing.wordpress.com/
7. Suzy Quilts
Sugar Pop quilt from Suzy Quilts
The Suzy Quilts blog is chock full of exciting colors, great tips, and fantastic tutorials. If you are looking for help with any quilty skill, check out their blog. They’ve got posts on hand quilting, binding, product guides and much more! Suzy Quilts is the first place I turn to for quilting help - their tutorials are very helpful and easy to follow. Plus, I love seeing all the beautiful pics of their quilts! Go check it out: suzyquilts.com/
8. Saroy
Sarah is the author of this delightful sewing blog. She has a very modern aesthitic (that I love!) and is open about her business practices, which is super helpful to those interested in monetizing their hobby. Sarah owns a longarm and also crochets and crosstitches, so it is always fun to read about her variety of crafty pursuits. Go check it out: saroy.net/
9. During Quiet Time
Amy’s Sunspots quilt
This is such a beautiful blog! Amy’s quilts are always fresh and inspiring. Each time I check her blog I am always pleasently surprised by all the creative new quilts she has made. If you are interested in foundation paper piecing, During Quiet Time is a great place to visit for both inspiration and FPP patterns. She also hosts Tell Me a Story block swaps on a regular basis, that might be something fun to look in to! Go check it out: duringquiettime.com/
