My Recent Crochet Projects

Lately I finished this small pouch for my grandmother. She has a interest in crochet, so we both started crochet pouch projects together. Orignally, I was using the popcorn stitch and started the pouch with a flat bottom. However, after putting several hours into the project I realized that the pouch was much too large and the popcorn stitch too time intensive to waste on a weird-sized pouch. So I completely switched gears.

I found this tutorial by AllAboutAmi and decided to make a version of that. I frogged my original pouch and started fresh. The star stitch was fun stitch to work up and it has amazing texture. Since didn’t love the way the joins between rounds looked, I crocheted the star stitch continuously and just disguised the incomplete round at the top of the pouch.

The inside of the pouch is lined with quilting cotton and also has a simple pocket. The process of attatching the lining and zipper to the crocheted exterior is always a struggle for me. This time I folded down the raw edge of the lining by 1/2 inch and then sandwhiched the zipper bewteen the exterior and the lining. I hand sewed the layers togeter with a running stitch and embroidery floss. This method worked OK, but it gave me a lot of ripples in the zipper.

Perfect size for a candy stash!

Project Overview: Bayleaf Star Stitch Pouch

Time: approximately 7 hours

Cost: $0

Materials: quilting cotton (Grunge from Moda), Lion Brand 24/7 yarn in Bayleaf, stash zipper

Pattern: loosely followed Star Stitch Pouches - All About Ami tutorial

My next project is a lot bigger. This will be my first crocheted garment - it’s the Sagebrush Tank Top from For the Frills. I decided a couple months ago I wanted to crochet an airy top for summer. After looking at hoards of patterns, I finally found one I’m happy with. This pattern using rows that run vertically so it gives the impression of ribbing.

Getting gauge has been kind of complicated but I’ve eventually settled on making a size medium because my row gauge is a little small. I’ve been using Ravelry lately to track my crochet and knitting projects and I love it! Seeing other people’s projects, what yarn they used, and their tips on confusing parts of the pattern has been really helpful. I can’t wait to finally wear something I’ve crocheted!
